The Post Season History: Giants v. 49ers

Hall Of Famers and Some Controversy
The Post Season History: Giants v. 49ers The Giants and the 49ers are meeting this Sunday in the 80th NFL-NFC championship game. The Giants who joined the NFL in 1925 are making their 19th championship game appearance; the 49ers who joined the NFL in 1950 will be playing in their 13th title game. Between them they have won twelve league championships and 8 Super Bowls, along with that rich tradition each team brings to the table Sunday, they have met each other in 7 memorable post season games, in each of the Wild Card and Divisional rounds as well as in the NFC Championship game. The 49ers hold the post season edge 4-3, with the winner going on to win the Super Bowl on 4 occasions. While each team’s history dates far back, they did not meet for the first time in the post season until the 1981 NFC Divisional Playoffs. January 3, 1982, 1981 NFC Divisional Playoffs, at San Francisco Delaware’s Scott Brunner who took over for the injured Phil Simms at quarterback in November for the Giants, threw three scoring pa...

The Original Christmas Day Football Game

The NFL’s Longest Day and the start of a NFL Dynasty
The Original Christmas Day Football Game Saturday December 25th 1971 Up to 1971 the NFL avoided playing on Christmas day. Case in point, in 1960 the championship game, which would have been played on Sunday December 25, 1960, was moved to Monday December 26 out of respect for the holiday. By the 1970’s television money ruled the NFL, and the networks felt that daytime Monday football would draw less ratings than a Christmas game, so the 1971 Divisional playoffs started on Saturday December 25th, with two more divisional playoff games to be played the next day. 1971 Miami Dolphins The AFL expansion Miami Dolphins compiled a 15-39-2 record from 1966-1969. For 1970 owner Joe Robbie lured Baltimore Colt head coach Don Shula to south Florida to take over the young Dolphins. The Dolphins did not win from 1966-69 but General Manager did Joe Thomas stockpile the team with promising young players such as QB Bob Griese and RB Larry Csonka. He picked up discarded players from other teams such as LB Nick Buoniconti and guard Lar...

Thanksgiving Revenge

And the birth of a coaching legend, November 22, 1962
Thanksgiving Revenge Green Bay at Detroit Aaron Rodgers and the defending champion Packers are 10-0 and appear to be favorites to win the NFC and defend their Super Bowl title. The surprising 49ers could get in their way as could the resurgent Detroit Lions whom the Packers meet today in Detroit. The tradition of the Lions taking the field on Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1934. Recently those games haven’t meant much but this year with the Packers being 10-0 and the Lions led by All-World WR Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford, at 7-3 this shapes up to be a great matchup. For me the best part of the NFL is its rich history – history that can and does repeat itself. And today the Holiday Table is ripe for that to happen again. You see, back in 1962 the defending NFL champion Packers were at 10-0 and came to meet the 8-2 Lions on Thanksgiving.  The team records are nearly identical to their contemporary counterparts and the visitors just so happen to be the defending champions. Could ...

EAGLES FLASHBACK: Rematch of Eagles v. Rams 1949 NFL Championship Game

EAGLES FLASHBACK: Rematch of Eagles v. Rams 1949 NFL Championship Game To open the 2010 season, the Eagles honored the 50th anniversary of their last NFL championship game victory, the 17-13 win over the Green Bay Packers at Franklin Field on December 26, 1960. Hall of Famers Norm Van Brocklin, Chuck Bednarik, and Tommy McDonald led the way that day in the championship game. The Eagles wore their 1960 throwback uniforms opening day 2010,  the cheerleaders each sported Bednarik’s number 60 jersey, and the Packers were back in town to open the season and venture back to a time when Philadelphia was king of the football world. It had the makings of a great day – to open a new season of hope and one that held a lot of promise. And of course to salute that 1960 championship squad. It was going to be a great football day. There was just one problem. No one sent the memo to the guys with the “G” on their helmets The Packers beat the Eagles 27-20. But that was last year! Now that the 2011 season has arrived, optimism for the B...

Memorable first opening day starts for Birds' QBs

Memorable first opening day starts for Birds' QBs The Kevin Kolb Era is here and make no mistake about it, this is the biggest football story in Philadelphia this year! Donovan McNabb is gone and the relatively untested Kolb is set behind center. While Kolb started 2 games last year during weeks two and three, it pales in comparison to the pressures associated with an opening day start. This is now his team and this will be his first game as the true leader of the Eagles when they host the Packers Sunday. Let’s take a look back at several key Eagle quarterbacks of the past and see how they did in their first opening day game. Sonny Jurgensen 9/17/61 vs. the Browns at Franklin Field The 1961 Eagles entered the season as defending champions. They won the NFL championship with Norm Van Brocklin at quarterback who retired after the championship game. Van Brocklin’s understudy, Sonny Jurgensen then in his fifth year would be make his third pro start, but first on an opening day against a solid Cleveland team led by Ji...

OLD SCHOOL: The Best Drafts in NFL History, Part I

OLD SCHOOL: The Best Drafts in NFL History, Part I There were 2 drafts in NFL history that helped shape two of the league’s greatest dynasties – dynasties that produced the 2 best teams the NFL has seen for a single season. While no single draft was solely responsible for creating these dynasties, these 2 drafts coupled with other successful drafts and free agent pickups resulted in sustained excellence on the gridiron.   Today’s piece will be the first of a three part series. In Part I we will define what makes a great draft and look at some of the drafts that rank behind our top 2.  Part II will chronicle the second best draft and Part III will detail the best single draft an NFL team has ever had.   To enable this piece to be the subject of debate, we must first define what constitutes a great draft. Certainly drafting players that play most or all their career with their drafting team is one factor. Another factor is achievement.  Did these players play in Pro Bowls or becom...
